Rachel is the best professor I’ve ever had. Her enthusiasm for the subject was contagious and her teaching strategies/ style made my writing 100x better. She covered absolutely every part of our writing. Very helpful feedback style. I feel like there was no stone left unturned in this class. My writing journey has been impacted so much by this class. Truly invaluable. 11/10 would recommend Rachel as a teacher.

Rachel was one of the best professors I’ve had at UCSB. She is always so excited for class and really loves what she teaches. Even though our class is 2 hours, it goes by so fast because she makes it fun. She is always reachable, whether in office hours or a message on Slack. She’s extremely helpful and gives you her full attention.

The process of drafting and revising helped me tremendously and I will continue to use these techniques for the rest of my life. My favorite technique was reverse outlining. Her feedback sheet held me accountable for my writing and she required us to answer questions about her feedback which forced me to read them in detail. It is a very good teaching technique.

I can honestly say that Rachel has been one of the most helpful instructors that I’ve encountered at UCSB. She had a true passion for what she is doing and spent a lot of time to help us succeed. Her evaluations and responses to our various writing projects were detailed and helpful. She also responded to any message, question, or concern in a detailed and thoughtful way.

I hate writing but I loved this class. Rachel is a warm and helpful teacher that wants to help you improve your writing, not judge you on it. She is constantly trying to make the class fun and engaging. She actually cares about her students succeeding, unlike many professors.

Rachel was an awesome teacher. She was very approachable and understanding. She made me think about writing in a different way and definitely helped me improve and succeed, not only in this class, but in other classes I had to write for. She would even remember little details about each student and sometimes use them in her feedback to make it specific to each of us.

Rachel created an inclusive community within the classroom via her teaching. She always made sure the entire class understood what we were doing and answered questions effectively as soon as she possibly could. Her teaching style, as well as flexibility, helpfulness, and availability for office hours really made the entirety of the class useful, if I do say so myself.

Extremely helpful, caring, and understanding. Will answer any question one has thoroughly. Very prepared every day and continually keeps the class entertaining with interesting course material and occasional humor. Great person, great teacher. I have become a much better writer thanks to Rachel.

Really engaging and eager to help. Pushes you to think beyond your past habits of writing and helps give specific feedback so you know exactly where your trouble spots were. She was amazing all around. Best writing teacher I’ve ever had by far.

FEMINIST STUDIES COURSES

The material Rachel taught us was very challenging, but after this class I have become so much more competent in reading and understanding feminist theories. What I loved about the way Rachel taught feminist theory is how I came to completely question my reality and things I used to take for granted. I have grown so much as a result of this class.

This was probably my favorite feminist class I’ve taken. It was challenging enough but not to where it felt helpless. The combination of lecture and discussion felt like a good balance and Rachel’s comments after everyone’s responses helped facilitate learning.

This class was hard but in a good way. It challenged me to think critically and apply it to real life situations so as much as it frustrated me, it pushed me to succeed.

I loved this class! By far my favorite class I have ever taken here at UCSB. I love the friendly discussion environment and the way that discussing concepts in class always made me realize new things that hadn’t occurred to me before. Coming to this class never really felt like a task or obligation, more like sitting down among friends and discussing topics important to our lives and society. I hope to take another class with you!!!

I loved how open and welcoming the class setting was. It never felt like someone was lecturing at us, we were not simply passive listeners. The class was very engaging and Rachel is very approachable. Overall, one of my favorite Fem courses.

Loved the application to current events and society. Loved the amount/types of reading because I looked forward to them and truly learned a lot. Loved the helpfulness Rachel provided and how she encouraged use to leave class still thinking about the topics/issues we discussed.

Rachel is a great instructor. She’s really organized, knowledgeable, helpful, and she facilitates and guides discussion so well. Her ability to facilitate discussion is better than most profs I’ve had. She engages students and after students talk, she keeps the discussion going better than most profs. I also like that she does the [paper revision] redo. She also develops solid, genuine relationships with her students that make class discussion more productive. She is also phenomenal at creating/helping students become critical thinkers. She does this through discussion but also through readings and by asking questions.

The last project [was the most productive in facilitating my learning] because it has a real-world application and I feel like I learned transferable skills. The presentation on an org was a good set up especially because we all did different orgs with different tactics and used that to inform our tactics for the final project. For me, the consensus building was a really great skill to learn.

Rachel is a great instructor because she gets to know us as people, not just students. We were able to apply our own interests to the new skills and information we learned. I also love how the class is more of a facilitated discussion, rather than lecture style.

I loved this class. It allowed me to see arguments on the other side and see the logic behind those so it made me more passionate about all of this. Rachel is up to par with some of the best profs I’ve had at UCSB. She’s funny, organized, and helpful, and she facilitates discussion effectively.

I loved the instructor and the environment in the class. Everyone was very open to different ideas and respectful of others. It was a very welcoming environment. I thought the journals were very helpful because the questions helped me to know what to look for while I was reading. Actually writing the journals forced me to articulate what I had read.

I really enjoyed working on the portfolio. It was nice to see all the work we’ve done in this course, as well as the knowledge I gained and the expression of this knowledge through the self-assessment.

The paper we wrote challenged me to look at an issue from multiple sides of the ideological spectrum; it was good for me to have to do that… Rachel held us accountable for the readings by discussing them each day in class.

I found myself questioning my own opinions and points of view, which as a good thing for me!

Rachel exceeded my expectations for the course. I was able to fully engage myself in and critically think about issues I used to be unfamiliar with. Thank you!

I loved it all! Great, supportive, facilitating teacher. Very respectful classroom which made it comfortable to express ideas. No bad remarks.
