Teaching Assistant Pedagogical Advisor

Pedagogical Advisor and Video Consultant | 2016-17, 2017-18

About the position: In this position, I consult with graduate teaching assistants and instructors about recorded classroom sessions. During these hour-long consultations, the teaching assistant reflects on their classroom strengths, weaknesses, and goals and we use the recorded video to identify and discuss specific skills and techniques that will assist with these goals.

Along with my colleagues, I participated in a video series hosted by the Teaching and Learning Excellence Series (TALES) that outlines some of our favorite tips for early-career teaching assistants who are entering the classroom for the first time. This short, externally-hosted video can be accessed here or by clicking on the video still below.

In addition to video consultations, I also developed a range of workshops for teaching assistants from all disciplinary backgrounds. I’ve included handouts for several of these workshops below (which anyone is free to use or adapt to their needs!):

Finally, this position culminated by organizing the inaugural Graduate Student Teaching Symposium in May 2018, a conference that integrated presentations from experienced graduate instructors and informational panels with faculty and program administrators about teaching-focused positions.
